Nathan Pinotti is an M365 Administrator at Milestone One, where he helps maintain the secure, compliant technology environment that supports colleagues working in clinical research around the world. With 16 years of experience and 21 professional certifications, Nathan has built a career spanning Microsoft cloud technologies, security, governance, and compliance.

But technology wasn’t always the career he envisioned. Nathan dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player until an injury changed his plans. He turned his focus to education, discovered a new passion for technology, and accepted his first role as a Junior Support Technician while attending college.

Today, after working across three consulting firms and building deep expertise as a Microsoft Cloud and Security Engineer and Architect, Nathan combines that experience with a passion for creating secure technology environments. Although his career took him in a different direction, sports remain an important part of his life, helping him stay active while spending time with his wife and two sons.

From Building Systems to Enabling Clinical Research 

Nathan first discovered Milestone One through a LinkedIn post seeking someone with expertise in Microsoft technologies, security, governance, and compliance. While the role immediately interested him, it was the interview that truly stood out. 

Instead of the formal technical interview he expected, Nathan found a relaxed but highly engaging conversation about helping build a secure, compliant, and efficient technology environment. Combined with the opportunity to work alongside colleagues around the world, it made his decision to join Milestone One an easy one. 

Today, Nathan is responsible for keeping Milestone One’s Microsoft environment both secure and functional while supporting colleagues with their daily technology needs. Much of his work happens behind the scenes, balancing security with productivity so employees can work securely and compliantly wherever they’re connecting from.  

Since joining the company, Nathan has had the opportunity to solve complex challenges that improve both security and his colleagues’ daily experience. Among the projects he’s most proud of are the redesign of Milestone One’s Virtual Desktop environment, which improved both the user experience and operational efficiency, and the development of the company’s External Sharing Tool. Working closely with the Development team, Nathan helped create a solution that enables secure collaboration with authorized third parties while adding security controls beyond Microsoft’s standard sharing capabilities. 

“Compliance and security are not projects,” Nathan shares. “They’re part of our daily routine.” 

That philosophy drives continuous improvement across the IT team as they automate processes, strengthen security controls, and support a growing remote-first organization operating across multiple countries and regulatory environments. 

But technology is only part of the equation. Nathan credits much of the team’s success to the collaborative culture within IT. “I can say 100% that our IT team is a real team,” Nathan says. “Mutual help is the standard. We combine everyone’s knowledge to find the best solutions to support the business.” 

Supporting Research Behind the Scenes

For Nathan, the most rewarding part of working at Milestone One goes beyond solving technical challenges. While he enjoys designing solutions that are tailored to the company’s business needs, it’s the people that have made the greatest impression. 

“From day one, I’ve been surprised by how much everyone cares about making sure I’m doing well and happy,” Nathan shares. The supportive culture has had such an impact that Nathan confidently recommended his own brother to join the company, where he is now also part of the Milestone One team. 

Ultimately, Nathan sees his role as contributing to something much bigger than technology itself. 

“Our mission in IT is to ensure everyone’s data is safe. Every day we work to provide secure, modern technology for employees, patients, investigator sites, and partners, delivering the best possible experience while balancing security and productivity.” 

Although much of his work happens behind the scenes, it provides an essential foundation that helps protect company and user data, enables collaboration across the globe, and supports the clinical research that ultimately brings new treatments to patients. 

Every security improvement, every refined process, and every colleague supported contributes to something larger: helping to expand the access of clinical trials to patients around the world.
